Operations Control Team Leader


Job description

Role Purpose

  • The Operations Control Team Leader (TL) will be primarily based at a Draken (Europe) Operational base at Bournemouth International Airport. They will:
  • Deputise fully for the Operations Managers of FRA Ltd.
  • Supervise and lead a team of Operations Controllers to deliver against all of the departments KPIs.
  • Ensure all activities within Operations are carried out in accordance with the Air Navigation Order and the Company Operations Manuals.
  • Build strong working relationships and effectively communicates with the various customer Points of Contact (internal and external) to ensure safe and compliant delivery of contracted services.

Key Responsibilities


  • Ensure operations are conducted in accordance with the Company Operations Manuals, Air Navigation Order, CAP 371 and all other relevant law of all ground operations activities conducted by FRA.
  • Ensure any breaches of the regulation are carefully Documented and appropriately reported.
  • Through ownership of the consolidated training schedule requirements, ensure all crew remain current and legal to operate.
  • Responsible for the effective implementation and operation of departmental Company’s Quality Management and Safety Management Systems.
  • Operate in accordance with Draken Europe’s Health and Safety Management Plan. Identify where the SHE Standards are applicable to appointed operations/tasks and apply safe systems of work where required.
  • Responsible for undertaking the required actions in response to an accident/emergency and in accordance with procedures laid down in the company Emergency Response Plan and relevant Operations Manuals.


  • Provide direction and guidance to the Operations Supervisors and Controllers.
  • Ensure Operations staff undertake procedures as per company manuals.
  • Ensure regulatory oversight of the planning and rostering of company aircrew personnel on all operational matters affecting the delivery of the agreed schedule.
  • Liaison with the Operations Manager and Director Flight Operations in determining the required aircrew required for future operations.
  • Provide effective oversight of the Phoenix software system to ensure all data is entered correctly to allow monitoring of limits laid down within CAP371 and FRA Operations manual Part A.
  • Drive effective cost management to minimise expenditure for company travel, accommodation and other associated costs.
  • Manage and monitor specific 3rd party contract partners.
  • Provide guidance and oversight for the coordination and planning of detachments away from the Main Operating Base (MOB).
  • Monitor and maximise operational performance and revenue within the scope of the role.
  • Proactively seek efficiency gains through continuous improvement.
  • Work with the CAMO and Maintenance teams to organise assets and resources in the most effective manner to minimise impact on contract delivery schedule.
  • Support Business Development staff with the development and delivery of business campaigns in support of the company strategy.


  • Be a point of escalation for Operations Control staff. This includes providing direction, guidance and support when needed.
  • Be responsible for setting clear objectives in conjunction with the Operations Manager as part of the PDR process for all Operations Controllers.

Core Skills

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years experience within an aviation environment. Ideally a military fast-jet operation (highly desirable).
  • An approachable manager, with a ‘can do’ attitude who leads by example.
  • Strong academic achievement, typically higher education standard (A-Level) or equivalent (desirable).
  • Knowledge of civilian and military aviation rules and regulations (essential).
  • SC clearance (essential).
  • Knowledge of flight planning software, crew planning and rostering systems (desirable).
  • Exposure to both military and commercial aviation sectors (desirable).
  • Experience of managing and controlling multiple resources within a dynamic and fluid environment.
  • Have a proven record of managing change (essential)

  • Ability to work with complex data and information to analyse and inform decisions.
  • Self-starting and motivated individual with a high level of interpersonal skills.
  • Strong IT literacy and is a capable user of Microsoft Office Suite, with particular experience with MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint.
  • Continually and pro-actively seeks new ways of working to improve overall business performance.
  • Possess effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt communication style to suit different audiences.
  • High level of energy and self motivation, often working under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Needs to be articulate and have the ability to build credible trusting relationships.

  • No breaches of regulatory compliance.
  • No infringements of the Operations Control Procedures Manual leading to operational failures.
  • Successful achievement of contractual Key Performance indicators.
