Role Purpose (position scope)

The Mission Systems Maintenance Team Leader is to provide leadership and co-ordination across the Mission Systems Maintenance teams within Draken Europe.

  • Responsible for the day-to-day delivery of mission systems equipment against daily flying program requirements.
  • Responsible for the production of new mission systems equipment.
  • Safety, Quality & Regulatory Compliance.
  • Staff productivity and non-productive time.
  • Delivery and promotion of the Company SMS.
  • Delivery of Continuous Improvement programs in line with best practice.
  • Effective communication and partnerships with Key Stakeholders including Flight Operations, CAMO, Safety & Compliance and Staff.
  • Effective delivery of the Draken business values.


Mission Systems Maintenance is highly regulated. Safety, quality and regulatory compliance associated with equipment maintenance is held as the first priority. The Team Leader must drive and deliver a culture of safety first ahead of schedule, with the highest level of safety and regulatory compliance across all relevant areas. Promoting SHE and Security in relation to the performance of mission systems maintenance activities is essential.

Operational activities are based around customer requirements; therefore, the preparedness to work additional hours and travel in order to deliver a successful maintenance business is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Safety first. Operate at Draken in accordance with the SHE Technical standards. Identify where the SHE Technical Standards are applicable to appointed operations/tasks and apply safe systems of work identified.

To maintain the overall performance of the mission systems maintenance operation and its personnel. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Accountable to the Senior Base Engineer, Fleet Maintenance (Bournemouth) for Safety, Quality & Regulatory Compliance
  • Accountable for routine and unscheduled maintenance of mission systems equipment.
  • Controlling the mission systems maintenance budget, including regular reporting, forecasting and allocation of staff against maintenance activities and detachments.
  • Coordination of mission systems maintenance equipment and spares between Bournemouth and Teesside including UK and overseas locations against the MSASS, NATO and RSAF detachment program. For TIA aspects, this should be conducted in consultation with the Senior Base Engineer (TIA).
  • Management and control of the mission systems maintenance engineering detachment rota.
  • Team Leader for Mission Systems security administration
  • Responsible for PDRs and career progression for line-reports as well as succession plans and ongoing updates to the mission systems equipment Skills Matrix.
  • Identify and implement areas of efficiency improvement & cost reduction but maintain highest standards of safety and equipment serviceability.
  • Provide advice and guidance to Mission Systems Maintenance team on P145 & P21G Regulations.
  • Main point of contact with Engineering Compliance for all audit matters relating to mission systems equipment maintenance, including corrective action plans and closures for any non-conformances.
  • The welfare, health and safety of staff under their control is maintained.
  • The training of personnel to the level necessary to complete the tasks defined in their job description. This includes non-technical, technical and “on the job” training.
  • Routine management of staff in accordance with Draken company procedures.
  • Security cleared to meet current UK and ITAR requirements in support of the business with the willingness to achieve DV level security clearance if required.
  • Any other duties that are reasonably requested by management within the capability of the incumbent.

  • In depth knowledge of mission systems equipment principles and its operation.
  • Sound knowledge C Rated workshop operations.
  • Sound knowledge of Regulatory requirements related to Line & Workshop activities (P145, P21G and ISO 9001).
  • Basic business acumen with knowledge of business financials and the financial decision-making process.
  • An ability to motivate people and influence change in line with company organisational values

  • Able to liaise and communicate effectively with Line Maintenance Engineers, Engineering Managers and Electronic Warfare Operators.
  • Significant experience in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, with a strong background in fault diagnostics and electronics troubleshooting.
  • Previous experience with the MS Office suite.
  • Educational Vocational Qualifications – Previous experience within a workshop or aircraft maintenance environment essential.
  • Satisfactorily completed an Engineering apprenticeship or other recognised equivalent training course.
  • Degree/HND (or equivalent experience) in a Science, Technology or Engineering discipline.
  • Satisfactorily completed a management training program desirable.
  • Proven track record, over 5 years within an aircraft maintenance or workshops environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of Regulatory requirements related to aircraft component maintenance is essential
  • Demonstrated high level Communication, Team Building and Partnership skills in dealing with stakeholders
